Text Box: All Warren County’s School Districts are key partners in this year’s countywide food drive

More families than ever are seeking assistance during these tough economic times.  Meanwhile, our food pantries in Warren County are struggling to keep their shelves stocked amid increasing demand and soaring food costs and “Kids Who Care” are working to help give back to the communities who have been so generous in supporting their schools every years.

The High School boy’s basketball teams and cheerleaders are organizing “Basketball for Food” campaigns, whose concept was started by Lebanon City Schools 3  years ago and promoted this year through the Ohio High School Athletic Association Foundation. All 8 school districts in Warren County are participating this year and over 500 other school districts across the state are introducing “Basketball for Food” in their communities for the first time.

What is “Basketball for Food”?  About 2 weeks before a special designated basketball game, the High School Basketball Teams and Cheerleaders in each school begin food drives at each of the school buildings in their district, by asking all students to get involved, bring donations of non-perishable and canned goods from home and even help generate donations from neighbors and friends.  Cash donations are also encouraged, since Food Pantries need money to purchase perishable food items, like eggs, milk, meat, bread, etc.

Then, on the night of their special “Basketball for Food” game, the community is invited to attend the game and admission to the game includes bringing donations of non-perishable & canned goods that are collected at the gate.

All food donation are weighed and cash donations counted and at the conclusion of halftime, the teams announce the amount of food they collected for their local food pantry. (Can you see how this might generate a little competition between the opposing teams on who can collect the most food?)  THAT’S WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO COME OUT AND SUPPORT YOUR HOME TEAM WHILE HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS IN NEED AT THE SAME TIME!

Lebanon High School raised 12,000 pounds of food their second year and over 22,000 pounds of food and $5,000 last year.  Can you imagine how much food could potentially be collected with 8 schools this year?

KIDS CAN’T LEARN IF THEY’RE HUNGRY

Lebanon City Schools started a "BackPack program 2
years, like many other Warren County School Districts.
We send home 6 meals in a back pack with 176 students
in grades kindergarten through sixth grades every Friday
during the school year.  Based on income eligibility,
approximately 23% of the Lebanon students receive free
or reduce breakfast and lunch programs. This is about
1200 students and about 360 of those students auto-
matically qualify for free breakfast and lunch due to
Family income or special needs.

According to the May 25, 2009 edition of the Ohio School Boards Association
newsletter Briefcase, 23.8% of Ohioans under the age of five live on the brink of hunger. Almost 1 in four Ohio Children are not consistently receiving enough nutritious food to lead a healthy life reported by the hunger-relief charity Feeding America. That puts Ohio as the third highest rate of food insecurity in the U.S., behind only Louisiana and North Carolina.

When you look at the numbers of children who qualify for the lunch program in Lebanon, it works out to approximately 7 children in each classroom of 28 students in the Lebanon City Schools. We realize that the 176 back packs that will go home with students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade will not address all of the problems. But, we hope that by providing this necessary essential of supporting a healthy body, it will help decrease the physical and mental impairment that might never be reversed in a child.

It costs about $25,000 for each school district to provide these weekend Back Pack meals to eligible children for the entire school year.

If you would like to become a "BackPack" Sponsor for the kids in your school district, please contact me and I will make sure to connect you with the appropriate contact in your school district. Any contribution is greatly appreciated but for $100, you will be feeding one child, every weekend for the entire school year…...and that is making a positive impact!

If you would like to make a cash donation for this effort, please contact Lebanon Superintendent Mark North or call him at 513-934-5770.

Thank you for your interest, support and efforts.
